Some days I can't even wrap my head around the changes that my students and I have gone through. I am not joking when I say I have literally changed the way I have taught seven times since March, 2020. Yes, <b><i>seven </i></b>times. While that is a lot for me as a teacher, I can only think of my students who have had to change their way of learning so many times. My students who I was teaching in March 2020 are now in Third Grade. I think of all the things that I didn't get to do with these students that school year. All of the learning and fun they missed out on. I didn't get to see these students much last year, but I have seen a lot of them this year in the hallways. <div><br /></div><div>Last year I moved back to Kindergarten. I was so excited to be back in my favorite grade level. We started out the year remote, and then moved into in person with small groups of students. As the year went on, I ended up being the remote teacher for my grade level. I loved my group of students I worked with, and we had a great year. However, I was itching to get back to working with students in person. </div><div><br /></div><div>This year has been such a refreshing change compared to the end of the 19-20 school year and all of the 20-21 school year. We are completely in person. Our students can share manipulatives. They can work in partners and in small groups. There are, of course, some restrictions still, but it is the closest we have been to "normal" since March 2020. Another big change for this year is that we moved into a brand new building. Our new building began construction in May, 2020, and we got to move into it in August. When I say this new building is amazing, I am not exaggerating. I feel so grateful that our students have this beautiful space to learn. </div><div><br /></div><div>This past year and a half was not only different in my professional life, but there were things that happened in my personal life as well. Last summer, I decided it was the perfect time to get a Masters Degree. Not any Masters Degree but an accelerated one. I started my first class August of 2020, and I finished it on October 8 and will graduate in December. Choosing to be a full time grad student while teaching during a pandemic may not have been the best choice I've ever made, but I am so glad that I did. This was actually my third attempt at obtaining my Masters. There are a variety of reasons why I was unable to finish the first two, but I was determined to finish this one as quickly as I could. During the previous school year, I took two grad classes every seven weeks. I'm not going to lie. It was hard, but it was so worth it! </div><div><br /></div><div>Another thing that happened was that we were in a car accident this summer. We were so excited to do a small vacation in the northern part of the state. We planned ahead, so that we would be safe everywhere we went. In the middle of the vacation, while we were on an island, we had the accident. Our car was totaled. I fractured a vertebrae. It was definitely not how we wanted our vacation to go. Looking back though, everyone was so nice and helpful. The sheriff deputy was so good with my son who is Autistic and helped ease his mind. The emergency room staff was amazing. This happened the first week of summer break, so the rest of the summer was spent recovering and dealing with medical bills and insurance. My advice to you is to never get in a car accident on an island. It takes the whole process to a new level. lol On the plus side though, we got an amazing car to replace our old one, I am healing, and my husband and son were not hurt.</div><div><br /></div><div>So needless to say, the past year and a half had its ups and downs. I'm looking forward to what lays ahead. Thank you for sticking with me! I have really enjoyed using this space to share ideas with others over the years. I hope to get back to this space more often and do more of what I love! <br /><div><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht1uw4CR7QC3KJkDs3d47bro4-8vq5MtRJy4nkBu1tAJKDborUSfLyG23G4D2_oFi4AzjqKdxAzJLSFcQvtt89nE8HffI3ym4Itah5r4aNZPSajvz1YSgJGDZasBDqoAl-7GlES9N7Pw/s1600/sig.png" /></div></div>Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06331091504048278854noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5250600590289031247.post-68609135881614786422020-01-08T18:32:00.000-08:002020-01-08T18:32:57.115-08:00Welcome Back to Teaching Is Sweet!The beginning of a new year is always a great time to start new things or go back to things that you have stopped doing that you enjoy. Getting back to things I enjoy includes getting back to Teaching Is Sweet. In it's beginnings, Teaching Is Sweet was a place that I shared all the goings on in my Kindergarten classroom. Things have changed a bit. I am now currently a First Grade teacher in a new district in a new state. I hope you join me as I share tips, tricks, and educational resources that will help you make your teaching sweet!<br />

I hope you have enjoyed your school year as much as I have! <br />
<br />
Today, I am going to share with you how important the first ten minutes of the day are in my Kindergarten classroom. Whenever this routine is changed for some reason (hello meetings), it throws off our day just a little. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2N-5huMqDa4ukgrh9K66rcsq2sukU18yuErvhHlcqt51xzvRnJABodP9ABqSLqisuqdkOFGb8s7J2wN2QGjKB_T2QMMVxFG0VtbjJpa7-OrvZRi98yC-1fTFPIRfFaNMgE4DkHPeyrsg/s1600/first+ten+minutes+2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Do your students have a routine for when they come into the classroom each morning? This is what the first ten minutes of the day look like in my Kindergarten classroom. " border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2N-5huMqDa4ukgrh9K66rcsq2sukU18yuErvhHlcqt51xzvRnJABodP9ABqSLqisuqdkOFGb8s7J2wN2QGjKB_T2QMMVxFG0VtbjJpa7-OrvZRi98yC-1fTFPIRfFaNMgE4DkHPeyrsg/s320/first+ten+minutes+2.png" title="The First Ten Minutes of the Day" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
To give you a little idea of our morning schedule, the bell for the students to come into the classroom is at 9:00. Our student council has a morning newscast each morning at 9:10 that we watch each morning, and our tardy bell rings at 9:15. <br />
<br />
The most important part of the first ten minutes happens as soon as I open the door. My students are lined up outside my classroom door. As each one of my Kinders walk through the door, I greet them with a "Good Morning!" and a wave. I feel that this is so important so that each child feels welcome in our classroom. <br />
<br />
After I greet my Kinders, they head off to their table spots. My Kinders then get out their take home folders and lunches if they brought one from home. I have a total of five tables of students that I call one by one to turn their red folders and lunch cards. (The lunch cards contain each student's picture, name, and barcode that is used when a student buys lunch. I place these on their tables each morning before the day begins.) The students place their folders in the big basket, and their lunch cards in one of the two smaller baskets.<br />
<br />

<br />
While I am calling each table, the other students are doing a variety of other things. They might complete an activity from the day before, cut out items for an upcoming project, color, and sometimes they just talk with each other. Once all of the folders are turned in, I quickly go through them to look for any notes or papers and take lunch count. By the time all of this has been completed, the student news is on, and we are ready to start our day!<br />
<br />
We start this routine on the first day of school. By the end of the first week, my Kinders are completing this routine without any help. I hope you enjoyed hearing about the beginning of our day! What does your class do in the first ten minutes of the day?<br />

The first day of Kindergarten! I just thought I would quickly share with you about my Meet the Teacher day and the first day of school. <br />
<br />
I went back to work last Wednesday for teacher work days. We had meetings on Wednesday. Then on Thursday my awesome principal gave us the whole day to work in our classrooms! {Plus, my bestie and I went out for lunch. We can't ever do that during the school year!} On Friday, we had a couple more meetings and some more time to get ready for Meet the Teacher. <br />
<br />
<b>Meet the Teacher</b><br />
One o'clock came and it was time! Many smiling faces came through my door that day! Some of the faces were new, and some were very familiar from past siblings. I enjoyed talking with each and every one of them! I even had past students come by to visit me. I always tell my students that they can visit me any time. <br />
<br />
Our Meet the Teacher is very informal. Families literally come in to meet the teacher, find their classroom, and ask any questions that they might have about the first days of school. We will have a more formal Open House next week where we go into all the details about our classrooms. Does your school have a Meet the Teacher session, Open House, or both? <br />
<br />
<b>The First Day of Kindergarten</b><br />
Today started with the students coming onto the playground with their families. Once the bell rang, we came inside. Our parents are allowed to come into the classroom, take pictures of their little ones, and say goodbye. At each student's spot, I had put the student's name tag to wear, the student's lunch card, and a First Day of Kindergarten coloring page. While the parents said their goodbyes, the children started coloring their pages, and I went around to help my students put on their name tags. <br />
<br />
After that, I taught my newest Kinders how to put their lunch cards and lunch boxes where they belonged. We then took lunch count to the lunch room and took a short tour around the school. I was so proud of how well my Kinders walked through the hallways! <br />
<br />
We got back to the classroom, and I gave my Kinders a little tour of our classroom bathroom. I love that we have a bathroom, well two actually, for the students to use. It's so convenient! We then got a drink of water from the water fountain and headed outside for a little recess and first day of school picture taking. <br />
<br />
We literally went inside for 10 minutes before it was time to go back out for our lunch recess. When my lunch was over, I joined my class in the lunch room. We let our Kinders take a little longer for lunch today since we are still learning our routines!<br />
<br />
We went back into the classroom, put our lunch boxes away, got a drink of water, and sat down to read our first story of the year. I read the favorite <i>First Day Jitters</i>. Before I read the book, we talked about the Back to School Magic Confetti that I sent the students. Many of my Kinders said that the confetti helped them get their jitters out. Score!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgde8cCXUACA0-GP_ylVqsCjuQbIFUgrpEkdhpwmpNW8ouEugRGZ108YKlOXxrlkLXg2GBHmd3eI-QiJl31GMDHz3-PBHpgU-lXpN2jlIHgjZb-HzgNBQV8P21b69aKmMKvbRt5v6sbXDw/s1600/IMG_20150817_181009.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgde8cCXUACA0-GP_ylVqsCjuQbIFUgrpEkdhpwmpNW8ouEugRGZ108YKlOXxrlkLXg2GBHmd3eI-QiJl31GMDHz3-PBHpgU-lXpN2jlIHgjZb-HzgNBQV8P21b69aKmMKvbRt5v6sbXDw/s320/IMG_20150817_181009.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After our story, I introduce our Smartboard to my Kinders. We sang a few songs using my August Smartboard file that I made a few years ago. It's always fun to see the students dance around!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next, it was time for the students go to PE and for me and my bestie to have prep. How is it that 50 minutes can go by so quickly? {haha} We then, once again, went out for a little recess time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We came inside, and I introduced my book buckets to my students. While the students read books, I pulled students to do handprints. Can someone remind me next year that handprints on the first day of school might be pushing it a little? lol Just kidding - my Kinders rocked it! Once the handprints were done, I showed the students their take home folders and they packed up. We finally talked about how great the day was, went over the dismissal procedures, and it was time to line up! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Overall, today was an awesome first day of Kindergarten! I can't wait to see what happens the next 179 days! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On my way home, I got myself a little treat! Yum!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Unfortunately for me, I didn't quite spread them out as much as I should have and gained a little weight. Once I stepped on my scale about the second week into summer break, I realized something had to be done. I went cold turkey and went 27 days without candy. (Boy was that hard! haha) Then I started tracking my calories in My Fitness Pal, and I lost pretty much all the weight I had gained. Yay! I am back to eating some candy, but definitely not bags of Swedish Fish at a time. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Thinking: </b>My birthday is at the end of this month, and I'm turning the dreaded 4-0. I can't really believe it. I don't feel like I'm going to be 40, but it's happening. I know there's nothing wrong with turning 40, but it's one of those ages that just feels different. Oh well, what are you gonna do? lol</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Wanting: </b>I love clipart! My husband not so much. lol He doesn't quite understand my clipart collection. I'm sure more clipart will join my collection during the TpT sale on Monday and Tuesday. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Needing: </b>I think I say this every time I do a Currently. There is really nothing that I need. I have a wonderful husband who loves me, a wonderful son that makes me so proud, a lovely home, etc. I can't think of one thing that I need. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>B2S RAK: </b>I don't know exactly what I am going to do, but I want to do something for the wonderful office staff. We have <i>the </i>best office staff at my school, and I want them to know how much they are appreciated. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I haven't done a Currently in a long time, but I'm glad that I did tonight! Thanks for stopping by!</div>

I cannot believe that it's the last day of July! Where did July go? My last post here on my little piece of the web was my June Throwback! Crazy! <br />
<br />
July was definitely a busy month here. I attended the I Teach K conference and the Teachers Pay Teachers conference the first full week of July. I learned <i>so</i> much! Both conferences were amazing! Then I have been subbing this summer. My son attended ESY at my school site, so I offered to help out if any teachers had to be absent. Today was the last day of ESY, and I subbed for a dear friend who used to sub for me. She told me it was funny that she was writing plans for me. lol <br />
<br />
Well, the reason we are all here, or maybe the reason I am here, is for me to show you some more throwback bulletin boards (and a couple not so quite bulletin boards but close enough). Everything that I am showing you is from a couple years ago. I would love for you to share some of your recent or throwback bulletin boards as well!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHqCX7-ijqtF9wHLExwPspnAZYgn_wCV8DHEjFMiFZBc67JBdN1OoDF2rl45ZuTjiUoeqIrryBxpn9RLweboGz_IHh2GcMVgLv1hFN-bPd0QSX1hH-YqJ9KgSB9VmEtyN7FT8JnYPzDjc/s1600/button2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHqCX7-ijqtF9wHLExwPspnAZYgn_wCV8DHEjFMiFZBc67JBdN1OoDF2rl45ZuTjiUoeqIrryBxpn9RLweboGz_IHh2GcMVgLv1hFN-bPd0QSX1hH-YqJ9KgSB9VmEtyN7FT8JnYPzDjc/s320/button2.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I wish I could claim credit for this bulletin board display. However, this was a project that my Kinders made in Art class. We have an awesome art teacher! All of the projects that my Kinders make are so wonderful. When I saw these winter scenes walk in my room, I grabbed them and put them up as quick as I could!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
This display is a project that we completed after reading "Five Green and Speckled Frogs." My Kinders first made a pond and a log. They then had to decide how many frogs to put in the water and how many to put on the log. After that was complete, my Kinders had to complete a few sentences as well as a number sentence. <br />
<br />

<br />
Here is the first of my "not quite a bulletin board" displays. My Kinders made these rainbows by picking a popcorn word and writing it in the correct color of the rainbow. I just love how they turned out!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivMuwWpRl8fBf8AyBvqbmeINNzu6X34UQ5AsX-daYo_zqoR2NatadNNRbllQgtmR49biA9CNO38SzSV6G9awJGvU0ZwIx0_BMliPJYWkOqOvvHlEldvreZpcAwTtcEeLftsG7cKrqrLIw/s1600/IMAG1717.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivMuwWpRl8fBf8AyBvqbmeINNzu6X34UQ5AsX-daYo_zqoR2NatadNNRbllQgtmR49biA9CNO38SzSV6G9awJGvU0ZwIx0_BMliPJYWkOqOvvHlEldvreZpcAwTtcEeLftsG7cKrqrLIw/s320/IMAG1717.png" width="216" /></a></div>
<br />
My last "not quite a bulletin board" is a door display that my Kinders made for Nevada Reading Week. To make these wonderful caterpillars, we completed a directed drawing. My Kinders then used watercolor paints to paint their very hungry caterpillars. I love how unique each caterpillar is!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifnOVXJg5frESr1lQDdKYEh7IJKx5QL-CAko_Rb_eg3kEpablnT1Qswmr9RwtVpat5gc8Vtl9LQovTQglWAw5BOOxoaUz_wc4l1XPAYimxRVclx0JnWK4QlbbEYnIdaQt5Bx55J86ylCc/s1600/IMG_4305.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifnOVXJg5frESr1lQDdKYEh7IJKx5QL-CAko_Rb_eg3kEpablnT1Qswmr9RwtVpat5gc8Vtl9LQovTQglWAw5BOOxoaUz_wc4l1XPAYimxRVclx0JnWK4QlbbEYnIdaQt5Bx55J86ylCc/s320/IMG_4305.png" width="182" /></a></div>

I'm back for another edition of What's On Your Bulletin Board Linky! This month, I figured since most of us are out of school we could share some throwback bulletin boards from either earlier this year or from years past. If, by any chance, you have bulletin boards from this month due to being year round or getting out late in June, please share those!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnd8MUiwfqnkkdF60MjbZ4EIHf031AkxPWLa0qGJnHy8672UMvW27I4GYN1F5rdgI_0He7-GWJyifkw9eaCz-vqP1TzpLFh9jVaOB7rvTfkZp4NGH_evmCW5W1IcF5aAiSBgNBK1ifWSg/s1600/button2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnd8MUiwfqnkkdF60MjbZ4EIHf031AkxPWLa0qGJnHy8672UMvW27I4GYN1F5rdgI_0He7-GWJyifkw9eaCz-vqP1TzpLFh9jVaOB7rvTfkZp4NGH_evmCW5W1IcF5aAiSBgNBK1ifWSg/s320/button2.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This first throwback bulletin board is truly throwback! It's from about 14 years ago when I taught in Kansas. It's so old that I had to actually scan the picture in. lol When I taught in Kansas, I was at a <i>very </i>small school. As in, my last year there I had 9 students in my class! We did not have an art teacher, so each Friday I did some kind of art project with my students. For this project, I had the students draw a flower in the middle, draw lines around the flower, and then color it in either warm or cool colors. I let my students decide which way they wanted to color it. {The middle two flowers are mine. I couldn't let my students have all the fun!}<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
My next two bulletin boards come from just a few years ago. This first one is a set of bulletin boards that contain my freebie <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Penguin-Shapes-Craftivity-495574" target="_blank">shape penguin craftivity</a>. My students love making these every year!<br />

<br />
My last bulletin board is a tooth fairy activity. My students colored a tooth fairy and then finished off the sentence stem. It was fun to see what they wanted the tooth fairy to bring them!<br />

My husband's car went into the shop for repair a dent leaving me without a car. The AC on the bottom floor of our house stopped working correctly. We went on a four day vacay to Disneyland. Friday felt like Saturday, and yet I'm still a day late for Five for Friday. But, remember one of my favorite sayings is better late than never! <br />

Do you remember the little tidbit I shared above about our downstairs AC? This is why we got it fixed as quickly as possible. It has been H-O-T hot here in Las Vegas. I took this picture yesterday at about 1:00. We try to stay inside as much as possible. We have a pool, but it's even too hot to get in unless it's early morning. How hot has it been where you live?<br />

Like I said above, we went to Disneyland for four days this week. We had such a great time riding all the rides! My son absolutely loves Disneyland! He even got a little Disney magic when we were there. Colton had been looking at a pin board and was interested in the pin below. Unfortunately, we didn't have a pin to trade, but he was ok with that. The cast member (CM) offered for us to get on a ride right away which was super nice! I politely declined because we were meeting my husband at the Alice in Wonderland ride. As we got off Alice, the CM was waiting at the exit and gave Colton the pin he had been admiring! How super sweet was that! She then took my husband and Colton to get on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride right away. All I can say is that CM went out of her way to make my son's trip so special! That afternoon, I made sure to go by City Hall to let them know about how great this CM was! Have you ever received any Disney magic?</div>

In 2008, my husband and I flew to Munich, Germany to pick up my brand new X3! We had a blast driving it around seeing the sights. Sadly, this is false! I have flown into Las Vegas tons of times (you tend to do that when you live here), but I have never sat next to Josh Duhamel. I would have loved to though! {Sorry that the picture is not centered, but felt it was necessary. You know, for editorial purposes. ;)}<br />

My wedding was outdoors during a tornado warning. - <span style="color: #93c47d;">True!</span><br />
<span style="color: #93c47d;"><br /></span>
It had been raining off and on all day, but apparently we were also in a tornado warning! Allegedly, telling the bride was something that no one wanted to do. I thought everyone was lying when they told me about it later! Luckily, nothing bad happened, and I married the best guy a girl could ask for.<br />

It seems like just yesterday I welcomed my Kinders in my classroom, and on Thursday I told them goodbye. We had quite the busy week last week. Monday was our Kindergarten promotion. We sang five songs for our families, and I have to say my Kinders rocked it! Tuesday, we completed some last minute learning. Wednesday and Thursday were completely for fun! I want to share with you some of the fun from the last two days!<br />
<br />
<b><u>Wednesday</u></b><br />
I knew that it was going to be a good day when this beauty was waiting in the teacher's lounge for me to grab up. Ok, so it wasn't waiting just for me, but I sure am glad I got to it before it was gone. So yummy! {Our super office manager got donuts for the school, and this is my absolute favorite one of the bunch.} <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6XAUuUCxfAY6_m2jPHQzBbrWFKF_F9bKqxY9MwEb7Nlg9e0JNNkyYvd19MlYOo2hzrdwJE223SKu79SW9kjmx9-sYOsazNvQ0dlmbN83s680ow9kgYKzb5OSKgDhjINC1sTgbvIwAwFo/s1600/IMAG3049.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="172" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6XAUuUCxfAY6_m2jPHQzBbrWFKF_F9bKqxY9MwEb7Nlg9e0JNNkyYvd19MlYOo2hzrdwJE223SKu79SW9kjmx9-sYOsazNvQ0dlmbN83s680ow9kgYKzb5OSKgDhjINC1sTgbvIwAwFo/s200/IMAG3049.png" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Ok, onto the fun in the classroom. My bestie and I decided that we wanted to do some fun crafting. She tackled one project in her classroom, and I tackled another in mine. The kids did some picture and word searches while we pulled them to do the projects. <br />
<br />
My bestie's project was a fireworks project. First the students took white crayon and drew a city scene on the bottom half of a black piece of construction paper. She then had students "draw" fireworks on with white glue. Finally, the students had a blast with glitter! Glitter was everywhere! So fun! I mean, really, who doesn't love glitter? {I mean besides my husband and custodian. lol}<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8B7K9jc8MxjFj35Q0MSdwYr8nRHbMKgapomiubUgBYnf0gsqJ5XyHBAcPvhe_Zgmq847Q5rUUDxjuja2hnX6zXSgF5ULa8DTiglg6uNLYc_3-D3HWQjNwZ00zLMe1kT7QfJrQxOnBVGs/s1600/IMAG3057.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="134" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8B7K9jc8MxjFj35Q0MSdwYr8nRHbMKgapomiubUgBYnf0gsqJ5XyHBAcPvhe_Zgmq847Q5rUUDxjuja2hnX6zXSgF5ULa8DTiglg6uNLYc_3-D3HWQjNwZ00zLMe1kT7QfJrQxOnBVGs/s320/IMAG3057.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
My project was marble painting. I had the students come over and sit on my carpet in a row. I had them write their name on their paper. Then I put their paper in the art trays, added blue and red paint, and handed them off! The students had so much fun watching the marbles make designs on their paper! Once the papers were dried, my bestie and I cut out the stars that were on the paper. Our Kinders were so excited to see their finished projects!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
At the end of the day, my Kinders went home with these envelopes filled to the brim with projects that they completed throughout the year, their year long portfolios, and their poetry journals. The students made the covers the second week of school by tracing their names with glue and tearing different colored pieces of construction paper. I then laminated them and added a plain piece of construction paper to the back to make the envelope. I wish I could show you the whole name, but I think you get the idea. :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2o7sRy3fsiPGvFslpQj8OTyQ3-i3lE6fSZ2iBq1ytlvP51QecP4F_Mn6nZSFZaNgGXXIglDLzIZYeaEm_8cWZ1XzlN3xL6f6otf5xKtY1BrhqKhe4wAemj2YfUpQeW73w5Lk9ax30feQ/s1600/IMAG3052.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2o7sRy3fsiPGvFslpQj8OTyQ3-i3lE6fSZ2iBq1ytlvP51QecP4F_Mn6nZSFZaNgGXXIglDLzIZYeaEm_8cWZ1XzlN3xL6f6otf5xKtY1BrhqKhe4wAemj2YfUpQeW73w5Lk9ax30feQ/s320/IMAG3052.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
My Kinders were so proud as they carried their envelopes out to their waiting families at the end of the day!<br />
<br />
<b><u>Thursday</u></b><br />
Thursday was a half day, but packed full of fun! We started off with a little dance party. We then went outside for a little chalk fun. A group of my Kinder girls drew me a house with a pool and casita. One of the girls then "sold" it to me for $300 and gave me $25,000 in change. Not a bad deal if I say so myself! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />

<br />
After the chalk fun, we went inside to watch our slideshow that my bestie made for us. It's always fun to see their reactions when they see themselves on the screen! We watched for a little bit and then went outside for some bubble fun. After they were bubbled out, we went inside for a little snack and watched a video until it was time to go home. My Kinders went home with a copy of the slideshow, a book from me, their report cards, and a hug! <br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by to read about my last two days with my Kinders!<br />

Today I am going to share what is currently on my scrapbook wall! Last year, my students made these <a href="http://mrslattinskindergarten.blogspot.com/2014/04/five-for-friday-on-saturday.html" target="_blank">prefix clouds</a> for the first time. My students had a blast making them last year, so I knew my Kinders this year would love making them too! {Please excuse this extremely horrible picture. I didn't realize this picture was so out of focus until I went to crop it.}<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have to share a close up of one of my Kinders' clouds. This Kinder loves tigers and has colored many of her free choice coloring projects to look like a tiger! I love how she made it her own!</div>

This is not part of my bulletin board, but I wanted to share how our displays may impact our students. This Kinder drew this picture to go with a sentence he wrote about rainbows. I just love his rainbow coming out of his cloud in strips!</div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.iheartgrade3.com/weekly-summer-link-up-my-goals-for-the-summer/" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2Y-RcvI_SXdRQHdE3zuIpxZMCRL0ngw8__BY02gdwVBGHJBd_E45PqeTBDUrjRuml38zqp3Uq7EvxQAbts2d8fYRxVIF__PzIrmBSH319u4npV5Zi8XC_Azec9mxZ8EIPwQBwjQ84SDE/s1600/Weekly-Blog-Linky-May-241-300x232.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The topic for this week is "My Goals for the Summer."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>1. Get my classroom organized.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is a 99.9% chance that I will be moving into a <i>much, much</i> smaller classroom for the next school year. If that does happen, I really need to get my classroom organized so that I can function next year in a classroom that is literally half the size of my current classroom. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>2. Finish/update some TpT products.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have several half finished projects on my computer that I want to finish up and put on Teachers Pay Teachers. There are also some older items that I made several years ago that could use some updating. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>3. Make a cleaning schedule.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really need to get myself on a cleaning schedule. No, my house isn't dirty, but a schedule would definitely help my sanity. lol</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>4. Relax.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last, but definitely not least, I want to just take some time and relax this summer. We have a great pool in the back yard, and we don't seem to use it as much as we should. We also have a couple trips planned for the summer that I can't wait for!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thanks for checking up my goals for the summer! See you soon! </div>

So I was looking through my files the other day, and I found a couple files labeled "Beginning of the Year." Great, I thought. Opened them up. They were full of transparencies! Um, I haven't used transparencies in years. I think it's time to get rid of these files. What do you think?</div>

Last week, my students made Earth day handprint Earths {you can see the completed project <a href="http://mrslattinskindergarten.blogspot.com/2015/04/whats-on-your-bulletin-board-linky-april.html" target="_blank">here</a>}. We used this fun glitter paint from Lakeshore Learning. I absolutely love this paint! I need to go back soon and purchase some in other fun colors!<br />

If you follow me on Instagram, you might have seen this picture. I totally forgot to make this sheet at home using cute fonts and had to use Comic Sans at school. I went out that night and bought a calendar so that I never have to use the evil font again! My Kinders didn't seem to mind. They were so proud of themselves for being able to identify all of the ways to make 7. </div>

This morning I counted the days until the last day of school and could not believe the number. We have 23 more days! I have so much I still want to teach my Kinders! We also have so much going on in the next 23 days - field trip, field day, promotion ceremony! It will be over before I know it. <br />

I do! I love putting up new boards and seeing my Kinders faces light up when they see their hard work up on the walls! However, I do have a little bit of a problem switching out my boards in a timely manner. I thought about how I could motivate myself to switch them out more often. What better way than to start a linky!?!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFmry_g3Dft6IXrPUQskH22PbQ_W5cBRPLGjh91cedbH1WScPE92cXkjTf0cyumQWrW3bF3PJ05VE-FvE27F28UJvbAA4MtwOHHXVCVUv_mik726evX5mN2TA7D4cwe-BEErEv34-jRhk/s1600/button.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFmry_g3Dft6IXrPUQskH22PbQ_W5cBRPLGjh91cedbH1WScPE92cXkjTf0cyumQWrW3bF3PJ05VE-FvE27F28UJvbAA4MtwOHHXVCVUv_mik726evX5mN2TA7D4cwe-BEErEv34-jRhk/s1600/button.png" height="160" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Each month I will share what's on my bulletin boards and would love for you to share what's on yours! My plan is to add a new linky on the last day of the month and have the link up available until the end of the next month.<br />
<br />
Today I am going to share with you what is currently on my bulletin boards in my classroom. Well, technically I only have two small square bulletin boards so I use my walls as quasi bulletin boards. <br />
<br />
My actual bulletin boards are currently housing spring poems that we completed together. We made a list of spring words for each letter and students got to choose their favorite words. They then chose a background color and glued their poems on. I love the spring colors!<br />

I hope you are having a wonderful week so far! Today was a big day in my classroom. Before my Kinders came in this morning, I switched out the large crayons that they had been using since the beginning of they year with small ones. To say they were excited is an understatement! Students who haven't really been interested in coloring were asking if they could color their skills sheets when they finished their center work. When we finished our map skills sheet today, we had a few minutes before dismissal. I asked if they wanted to draw a picture on the back and use their new crayons. There was a resounding yes! My Kinders were so proud of their pictures!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV1Hssx3KUubbHYsYwLizdxptkSRwj24kH_zVO70r_-ISjZrj3dGA25GugOo-ym2vzDjD4MlEkekhkv94yDeyW7B9XifesWZG_KrKbY19-ixqjkMMFPT89PodHtd9hFJ1SRMjcqu02OyI/s1600/IMG_20150429_164956.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV1Hssx3KUubbHYsYwLizdxptkSRwj24kH_zVO70r_-ISjZrj3dGA25GugOo-ym2vzDjD4MlEkekhkv94yDeyW7B9XifesWZG_KrKbY19-ixqjkMMFPT89PodHtd9hFJ1SRMjcqu02OyI/s1600/IMG_20150429_164956.png" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Do you use the large or small crayons in your class or a combination of both throughout the year? I would love to hear what other teachers use!<br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by!<br />

Well, that is exactly what happened to me a few weeks ago. <br />
<br />
I love having my Kinders do a Write the Room activity almost every week during literacy centers. It gets them up and moving around the room while still providing them practice with a needed skill. Some of skills that I have had my Kinders work on are letter identification, identifying beginning, medial, and final sounds, writing CVC/CVCe words, and syllables.<br />
<br />
A few weeks ago, I had my students completing a syllable activity as their Write the Room activity. Students went around to pictures, clapped out the syllables, and colored the matching number of pictures on their skills sheet. Well, we did a similar activity the prior week, and I had to go around the room to find the answers. This time I thought there must be a better way. Of course there was! <br />
<br />
My solution was to print off both pages onto one sheet. I told you it was simple. lol<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoWt9XKUIdUjMiRjni553XK_tUrY-1idwPy7XtbQ7wEtZxix6sehqbqdM57dZZlW3e7ew8QqYl8oHdRL9OWbwLF61SYrnuARCXsYX6SbckAJYJ07JFbsY4FX-mTMQ32s9r9KWDEEUmJ3k/s1600/IMAG2798.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoWt9XKUIdUjMiRjni553XK_tUrY-1idwPy7XtbQ7wEtZxix6sehqbqdM57dZZlW3e7ew8QqYl8oHdRL9OWbwLF61SYrnuARCXsYX6SbckAJYJ07JFbsY4FX-mTMQ32s9r9KWDEEUmJ3k/s1600/IMAG2798.png" height="320" width="279" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are the steps that I used to put my two pages on one in case you have never done it. Please note that my screenshot is using Adobe Acrobat Pro, but I checked on another computer that only had Adobe Reader and it worked exactly the same. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAMXA8SJmNZhTr1F0peXrj5SOUs5zu5NVSc6OJhomUoCmowOAXVZb9tbpleD7ljQADHR0x8LgTqNcor6okVISV4C-cjCcVNqN3h063F4TI-slbHIbEiFx38xMooV3IDUU1_O6iT81iFy4/s1600/checking+work+tip2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAMXA8SJmNZhTr1F0peXrj5SOUs5zu5NVSc6OJhomUoCmowOAXVZb9tbpleD7ljQADHR0x8LgTqNcor6okVISV4C-cjCcVNqN3h063F4TI-slbHIbEiFx38xMooV3IDUU1_O6iT81iFy4/s1600/checking+work+tip2.png" height="212" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. Pick the pages that you want printed. {I chose just the two pages from my syllable activity, but you could chose the whole packet if you wanted.}</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Click on the "Multiple" button.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Click on the "Pages per sheet:" drop down menu. You can pick 2, 4, 6, 9, 16, or custom from the menu. {I chose 2, because my activity was only two pages long. I would have chosen a larger number if I had needed more pages.}</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. Finally, you need to chose the orientation. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once I had gone through all of those steps, I printed it off and was able to check my Kinders' work with ease! I hope this tip will help you in some way!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
Thanks for stopping by!<br />
<img src="http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u378/designbychristi/teachingissweet/sig_zps683c8f9f.png" />Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06331091504048278854noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5250600590289031247.post-50686960550708460342015-03-19T20:17:00.000-07:002015-03-19T20:17:14.654-07:00March Blogger-MatchupAre you a big college basketball fan? I grew up right in the middle of Kansas Jayhawk country, so you can only imagine what March was like around my area and school. I'm not kidding when I say that we had TVs in our library to watch in between classes and in our lunchroom to watch during lunch time. My poor husband had no idea when the KU was playing in the championship game and they were making bad plays that he might have to replace the TV due to me almost throwing the remote at it. Thankfully, I came to my senses before that happened. lol <br />
<br />
Being away from Kansas for March Madness time has dwindled my basketball craziness, but I still try to keep up with the goings on with my Kansas teams. I was super proud of Wichita State getting into the final four in 2013! It should be interesting if KU and Wichita State win their first round games and play each other. That will be a game that I will have to try to catch if it happens.<br />
<br />
Ashlyn from <a href="http://www.the-creative-classroom.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">The Creative Classroom</a> decided to have a fun Blogger Match-Up that corresponds with the basketball tourney! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQs_aATmFxceOET00O830-YzSPfREvHhNwxgV8kULX6EyH9qvkTdpokNXGbmnfihBy250F0mWrGr6iMW_PPmV5oqwWdmo6q1Gib9B-VW6kVuYyxsLsZ5kekcrNE1FKIVFKkAokrRz2OBU/s1600/bloggermatchup.001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQs_aATmFxceOET00O830-YzSPfREvHhNwxgV8kULX6EyH9qvkTdpokNXGbmnfihBy250F0mWrGr6iMW_PPmV5oqwWdmo6q1Gib9B-VW6kVuYyxsLsZ5kekcrNE1FKIVFKkAokrRz2OBU/s1600/bloggermatchup.001.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
Each blogger is paired up with a team in the tourney. As the teams win, the bloggers mover up in the brackets. At the end there will be a blogger winner along with the National Champion. <br />

Usually our leprechaun visits us and wrecks havoc in our classroom, but he was a little subdued today. He left gold glitter all over our classroom tables, necklaces at each spot, and traded in all of our pencils for green pens! He was fast too! He did this all in the time it took me to turn around and open the door from the playground. ;)<br />

Did you think I disappeared again? I really can't blame you. I mean it has been about a month and a half since the last time I shared anything here on my little piece of the web. Well, tonight I decided to jump right back in and write up a little blog post about what's been going on in Room 2. <br />
<br />
<b>Community Helpers</b><br />
We have started our community helpers unit. Every year I have students draw pictures of what they would like to be when they grow up. I love the pictures that I have gotten in the past, and I have not been disappointed in what my students have drawn this year. I love how the patients in the doctor picture are sad (but the doctor is happy), the details on the scientist picture, and of course, the teacher picture. <br />

<b>Listening Station</b><br />
For the past few years, I have just had my students listen to a story over and over again until time was up. A few months ago, I realized that I really needed my students to do some kind of response to the stories that they were listening to. Now, I didn't want anything complicated or with a lot of writing. I just wanted a little something for them to do after they had listened to the story the first time. This past week our story at the listening center was <i>If You Give a Cat a Cupcake</i>. I thought it would be fun for the students to pick something that they would like to give the cat. Here are some of the responses that I got.<br />

<b>St. Patrick's Day</b><br />
We have been doing some fun activities to gear up for St. Patrick's Day. On Friday, I handed my students a shamrock with a variety designs on it. The students then had to color it using only using green, yellow green, and green yellow crayons. I thought they turned out so great! Here is what one of the shamrocks looked like when it was finished.<br />

Overall, my new year has been going really well. Last week, my school had a fire drill during Kindergarten lunch. My class rocked it out! It didn't even phase them to go to a different spot outside. Proud teacher moment, for sure!<br />
<br />
I want to share an activity that my Kinders completed last week. Do you use nursery rhymes in your classroom? Each week my bestie and I pick a nursery rhyme to focus on. We use it to identify popcorn words, rhyming words, and to work on reading fluently with one-to-one correspondence. On Friday, we put the nursery rhyme into our poetry journals and usually do a fun activity to go with it. Well, two weeks ago our nursery rhyme was <i>Hey Diddle, Diddle</i>. We started this project on Friday before the three day weekend, and finished it up last Tuesday {It took a smidge more time than we had planned for - oops!}<br />
<br />
I love making flipbooks with my students! Oddly, we hadn't made one yet this school year. So, off I went to prepare a fun flipbook to go with <i>Hey Diddle, Diddle.</i> First I folded a 12 X 18 sheet of construction paper lengthwise, measured out four sections of 4.5 inches each, and drew lines with my sharpie. I then made copies of the nursery rhyme and matching pictures.<br />

Each student was given a prepared piece of construction paper, a copy of the nursery rhyme, and a copy of the pictures. The students first cut on the black line to make the flaps for their books. They then colored the frames and pictures. Once the frames and pictures were colored, the students cut them out and put them in order with the nursery rhyme on top of the flap and the picture under the flap. <br />

</div>
Do you Instagram? I joined Instagram about a year and a half ago. I added one picture of my son's Earth Day crafts for school. About a week later, I added a couple more pictures from my classroom. Months later I added a picture of my son going down a water slide. To be perfectly honest, I had no idea what I was doing with Instagram. The hashtag thing confused me to no end. Well, I finally bit the bullet in about April and really started to add more photos. I became a little more confident in my hashtagging (verb?). Now, I don't know what I would do without it. I find it to be so much fun to share my pictures and to check out other great teachers!<br />
<br />
This morning I was looking over my blog feed and saw that Natalie from <a href="http://teacherytidbits.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Teachery Tidbits</a> started a fun linky about her top 10 Instagram pictures. I decided to jump in on the fun!<br />

My son has used a communication device at school since he was 4 years old. He started out with an iPod with Proloquo2Go. He then went to the Galaxy Player with Sonoflex. Now he has his HTC with TalkTablet. By far, the HTC is the best device he has to date. He only used it for about a week before Winter Break, but he was very happy with it. His teacher was too! I'm so proud of him!<br />
